It all started when Lindsie Bergevin told her friend Stephanie Palmer about my Comp Book Cover sewing pattern. Lindsie and Stephanie just finished developing the Quilter's Planner Mini (quiltersplanner.com), and thought it would be cool if a cover was available for it. They asked me to design one, and here it is! And since I also really like Field Notes memo books (fieldnotesbrand.com), I included a smaller size, too. I have your bases covered, folks.
First of all, I wanted the front cover of the pocket notebook to be visible. Some covers are just too good looking to hide, right? Also, I wanted a pen loop that lets a pen nestle into the center of the interior, inside pockets so your stuff won't fall out, and an elastic enclosure. Plus, it needs to be a really simple sew.
I prefer to have a group of people test out the pattern before I release it, but I just didn't have time for that this go-around. So I was my own pattern tester.
The first prototype result: need to make the pocket flap longer so the pen can nestle in the center.
The second prototype: pen fits snugly and dimensions are good. I used an insert of two layers of extra-firm stabilizer sewn together, but it was a bit fiddly to fit inside. I noted to use a single layer of ultra-firm Peltex for the next one.
Then I made a quilted version. Talk about a perfect use of batting scraps!
Yep, pretty perfect. And this cover is mine all mine.
I tested the smaller pocket notebook cover size with my husband's Field Notes. He handpicked the fabrics: black linen and blue cotton. So masculine.

I love how this fabric swatch magnet board is both a helpful tool and a piece of art on its own. It looks so good in my sewing room!
