Mando
“Mando” quilt, 24″ x 24″, made in April 2020.
Here’s the Mando quilt! I love that he’s a badass with a kind heart. Those are my favorite people IRL, too. I loved loved loved making this – it was so therapeutic for me to make in the midst of all the madness in the world. It’s a secret gift for a Star Wars fan as part of the May the 4th mini quilt swap (#MayThe4thMQS4 on Instagram).
I’m a fan of Eli Hyder and I asked if I could use one of his Mandalorian illustrations as inspiration for a quilt and he said yes! Here’s his illustration:
Here’s my simplified quilt grid version:
And here are my sewing translation lines for foundation paper piecing. I use Adobe Illustrator software in my design process. This is the way.
I chose my color palette, going with Kona Cotton Solids from my online shop Sewfinity, plus a few I had in my fabric stash. I used Ivory, Scone, Honey, Taupe, Earth, Brown, Chocolate, Espresso, Black, and White. I also added in Champagne and Sand after this pic was taken. (whoa, wait a second, how about some champagne and sand in real life?!)
Here’s the design wall progression:
My favorite part of the quilt is his helmet. It’s just so cool looking. I quilted him with simple straight lines in a diagonal cross hatch using Aurifil 40wt thread in Medium Grey.
Now go follow Eli @venamis and tell all your non-quilty friends that quilting can be cool!
